The Challenge

Students often struggle to see the connection between their current coursework and their deeper sense of purpose. When learning feels disconnected from personal values and future aspirations, motivation wanes—especially during critical transitions like moving from middle school to high school or preparing for postsecondary pathways.

The Solution

Values Connection is a research-based activity designed to help students find greater value and meaning in the pursuit of their goals—whether through their current learning, coursework, future career or college plans, or other postsecondary pathways.

Grounded in Motivate Lab’s relevance affirmation intervention research, this activity guides students through exploring their personal values and connecting those values to their education and future goals.

How It Works

  1. Students explore their personal values
Through guided reflection, students identify what matters most to them—their core beliefs and principles.
  2. Students connect values to education and goals
Students make explicit connections between their values and their current learning, future career aspirations, or postsecondary plans.
  3. Students find greater meaning in their pursuits
By linking coursework and goals to personal values, students develop a stronger sense of purpose and motivation.

The Evidence

Values Connection is based on Motivate Lab’s relevance affirmation intervention research, which demonstrates that helping students connect their learning to their personal values can increase motivation, engagement, and persistence—particularly during critical transition periods.
